Green Wing Cast Signing

The DVD

I was up at Talkback today, and got my copy of the Series 1 DVD (and did a video interview for some web stuff, more tba)

If you haven't already pre-ordered it, get on a do it now. It's fabulous.

For fans of the show, the audio commentaries alone are reason to get a copy. They offer such great insight into the Production process, and even I've learnt stuff I never knew!
Show 1 commentary is by Editor extraordinaire Billy Sneddon, and creator Victoria Pile.

There's also loads of Extra Scenes and I cannot recommend it enough - really exciting stuff.

The commentary on Episode 9 is particularly good!

Can't remember what the spider was...it probably came from either Martyn the cameraman or Rob the Lighting Director.
Apart from the serious business of filming telly, there was a little bit of mucking around off camera.

The Screening

Had a great evening last night, rubbing shoulders with cast and crew alike, along with a million people I didn't know.

Most of the cast were there, in no particular order: Tamsin Grieg, Julian Rhind-Tutt, Stephen Mangan, Mark Heap, Pippa Haywood, Karl Theobald, Michelle Gomez, Oli Chris, Katie Lyons, Lucinda Raikes, Sally Bretton

The theatre was full of cast, crew, Channel 4 bods and press.
It started with a brief re-cap of where we left the last series, and then went straight into episode 1.

Now that it's been seen by people not associated with the team, I can probably get away with passing on a few details, but will hold back on major and significant plot lines.

As were getting close to air, and this doesn't give any plot away, I thought I'd post a few Series 2 pictures for all you die-hard fans.

This is a picture in the Doctors Mess, with Karl and Stephen.

Often we have to mock up pictures of the cast in order to dress them in around their 'houses' to make the space more personal and realistic.

These two pictures show a before and after version of a picture I took which I mocked up for Joanna's flat, creating a late 60's holiday snap of Guy's father, obviously using Stephen dressed up.

Once I took the photo, I cut them out using Photoshop and put them on an Alpine background.

I'm not sure the viewer could even see this picture on set, but perhaps you can look out for it in the final epsiode of the series, when Guy visits Joanna at her flat.

Popped in to Talkback today, as I was in the area.

I had a chance to see some of the publicity photos, and they're superb...keep an eye out for those.

I also had a chat about the forthcoming DVD and it seems like it has some rather fancy packaging. It looks great and will be released April 3rd, so get you're pre-order in !

Finally, caught a snippet of Show 1, which looks every bit as funny as I remember it, if not funnier. I'm sure fans will not be disappointed. I'm very excited to see it come out, and as ever, feel very proud to have been a part of such a milestone in TV Comedy.

Can't say anything more than that, sad to say, but tune in around the end of March to be confirmed.....

A visual trip around Sue White's Office

These three photos will hopefully give you a little glimpse into the world of Sue White, and the amount of detail that goes into dressing a set.

Notice the paperwork on the pin board for example. All of which is custom made by us and contains real information that could be in an actual Head of HR office, just in case any of it can be seen on camera.

The cut-out flower on the window ledge has a long history. It was first hired for the pilot episode, which was shot on location in an empty office in Basingstoke.

When the pilot was commissioned, and the first series was made, Sue White's office became a set, which we had to match exactly to the interior of the office from the pilot.

Sadly (for us) the flower didn't exist anymore by the time of the series, so we had to make our own, as close to the original as possible.

This was then kept until series 2, and used again, as was a lot of the prop dressing. Continuity, continuity, continuity!

Ambulance stunt

Later that morning, after setting up the various ambulance rigs, Stephen, Karl and Julian were driven down to the cliff edge, and then blindfolded.

They were carefully led to the spot where we had rigged the ambulance.

This photo shows the moment that we revealed the ambulance rigs to them, with the ambulance on the cliff, and the second dummy ambulance on the gimbel rig.

There's so much to write about this day, that I'll have to post more later.....

The Cliff Hanger

26th November 2003.
I arrived at Seaford Head at about 5am that morning. I have never known weather like it. The wind was gusting to at least 50mph, and the rain was torrential.
Our dining bus swayed back and forth rendering the upper deck useless.
The facilities vehicles looked fragile. A vigorous low pressure system was descending across southern England, and we were feeling the full force of it.
As dawn broke, the atmosphere amongst the crew was very tense.
It was costing a fortune to be here with so many special effects and stunt people. It was clearly far too dangerous to film on a cliff top, and the prospects were looking grim.

Dawn broke.

Miraculously, as the sun came up, the wind died down and the rain stopped. An air of calm descended. The change from the pitch black morning storm to the peaceful dawn was nothing short of incredible.

I even had the pleasure of doing an audio commentary with them for the forthcoming DVD.

They are extremely talented, very funny, and completely lovely. I only wish I'd been able to work more closely with them, but sadly my job pretty much starts once theirs finishes. I can't believe I worked on three series of Smack The Pony with them and didn't see them once!

Anyway, click on their link on the right and check them out.

One day, when they're collecting their Lifetime Achievement Award to British Comedy, I'll be able to say "I worked with them!"

The Office Scenes

We filmed here in December of 2003, and it was pretty cold!

The Camel

Imagine having designed and built the set, and then being asked whether Sue White could ride a camel down the corridors?

Just another little predicament to solve.

Once we had found the camel, we had to brief the handlers as to exactly what was required, and then work out whether the animal would not only fit into the set, but would be happy to do it.
There were all sorts of logistical problems, such as how best to get the shortest route to give the camel the least amount of walking in the studio as possible.
What to do about the inevitable camel mess....
At this point, it's worth mentioning that the welfare and well-being of the camel was completely paramount.
It may look a bit mad and a bit of fun, but a huge amount of planning went into this sequence in order to make the camel's filming as pleasurable for the camel as possible.
This meant keeping the camel on set for a very short space of time, and allowing it's handlers to have complete control over what was possible for the camel to do, and when it needed to go back to its trailer. The handlers were extremely professional, and the camel was very well cared for during it's brief visit..

On the day, it was beautifully behaved, and more importantly for me, didn't mess on the set at all! (When I worked on Brass Eye, we had an elephant in the studio that decided to relieve itself, and when those things wee, they just go on and on. It was like emptying out a paddling pool....not fun)

Sunrise over Basingstoke

This blog covers Series 1 only at the moment, but will include series 2, as and when it's aired.
This picture was taken at 05:13am on the 18th October 2003, looking across the fields at the bottom of the overflow car park where our unit base was.
The weather was almost always great in Basingstoke when we were filming. It was however, one of the hottest summers on record, and our Art Dept. office was a dark blue 7.5 ton truck that was often hotter than an oven!
Of course, we were extremely grateful to have our own location office, which served us well during filming.
